Coronavirus: Govt prepares detailed plan to bring back Indians stranded abroad

The Ministry of External Affairs has prepared a detailed exit plan presentation for bringing back Indian nationals to the country after the global lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic eases. The presentation was showed to top government officials during a meeting held by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Saturday. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla laid out an elaborate plan on how the ministry plans to bring home Indian nationals — with an exact count of who is where and how many flights it would take from each country to various states in India. As part of the plan to bring India’s stuck abroad home, it was also suggested that authorities should ensure that they come to India with Covid-19 negative certificates…

White House considering replacing Health and Human Services chief Alex Azar: Report

President Donald Trump’s administration is considering replacing its secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, because of early missteps in the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the Wall Street Journal and Politico reported on Saturday. A White House spokesman, Judd Deere, denied it and said the HHS under Azar continues to lead on a number of the president’s priorities. “Any speculation about personnel is irresponsible and a distraction from our whole-of-government response to Covid-19,” Deere said. The Journal, citing six people familiar with the discussions, said frustration with Azar was growing but the administration was reluctant to make big changes while the country was seeking to stop the virus, which has killed more than 53,000 people in the United…

Global coronavirus death toll hits 200,000 as some lockdowns eased

As the global death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 200,000 on Saturday, countries took cautious steps toward easing lockdowns imposed amid the pandemic, but fears of a surge in infections made even some outbreak-wounded businesses reluctant to reopen. The states of Georgia, Oklahoma and Alaska started loosening restrictions on businesses despite warnings from experts that such steps might be premature. Shawn Gingrich, CEO and founder of Lion’s Den Fitness, decided after the Georgia governor’s announcement that his Atlanta gym would remain closed for now. “We’ve sacrificed so much already,” Gingrich said. “I feel like if we do this too soon, we’ll see a spike in cases and we’re back to square one.” Others were eager to get back to business,…

Delhi govt to implement MHA rules

After initial confusion on Saturday, the Delhi government decided to implement the MHA guidelines on the opening of neighbourhood and standalone shops during the lockdown. The AAP government has, however, clarified that the order is not applicable to shops in all the containment zones. This decision was taken after confusion prevailed among traders and shopkeepers across the National Capital on Saturday following the Centre’s order to allow some shops to open with mandatory precautions like wearing of masks and social distancing. Many shops, including those of books, sweets and tailors, remained open in East Delhi’s Krishna Nagar Jheel Market on Saturday. Most shopkeepers stepped out on Saturday as confusion prevailed over which shops were to be opened. Hardware shops in…

Britain passes ‘terrible’ milestone of 20,000 coronavirus deaths

Britain’s COVID-19 death toll passed 20,000 on Saturday in what the interior minister called “a tragic and terrible milestone” as she urged people to stay at home. The government is facing growing criticism over its response to the new coronavirus pandemic as the death toll rises. Britain was slower to impose a lockdown than European peers and is struggling to raise its testing capacity. The country now has the fifth-highest official coronavirus death toll in the world, after the United States, Italy, Spain and France, and scientists have said that the death rate will only start to decline quickly in another couple of weeks. In mid-March, the government’s chief scientific adviser said keeping the death toll below 20,000 would be…

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.  Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. What is COVID-19
