India Today Exclusive: Mumbai survivor recounts Covid-19 horror, says show humanity

At a time when the world is battling lockdown over coronavirus and every news headline screams of information about containing the pandemic, one would imagine empathy does exist in society for the patients. That was surely not the case for a South Mumbai-based survivor who has recounted his horror story after he tested positive for Covid-19. The patient had a travel history to the United Kingdom. He traveled to the UK on March 4 when the world had not come to a screeching halt and neither was the infection declared a global pandemic by the United Nations world health body, World Health Oganization (WHO). As soon as the WHO declared coronavirus a pandemic, the survivor, who had no symptoms, flew…

New coronavirus cases in Italy fall to 25-day low, deaths rise by 604

Deaths from the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy rose by 604 on Tuesday, a lower daily tally than the 636 seen the day before, while the number of new cases posted the smallest increase since March 13. The total death toll in the world’s hardest-hit country since its outbreak came to light on Feb. 21 rose to 17,127, the Civil Protection Agency said. The total of confirmed cases increased by 3,039 on Tuesday to 135,586, the second successive daily decline, underscoring growing confidence that the illness is on the retreat thanks to a nationwide lockdown introduced on March 9. New cases rose by 3,599 on Monday. Previous daily increases since March 17 had all been in a range of 4,050-6,557. Of…

There are 229 people who are under quarantine in the E ward. Efforts are being made to contain the spread,” Rais Shaikh, MLA Bhiwandi and Corporator Byculla, said. Earlier, 52 staffers from Wockhardt hospital who were tested positive also came under the E ward. Other clusters of cases were found in Morland road where 10 from a family have tested positive. In that case, it is suspected that…

MP govt orders investigation into how health officials contracted coronavirus

The Madhya Pradesh government will track the contact history of health department officials who have tested positive for coronavirus and take suitable action after fixing responsibility, a government release quoting health commissioner Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, who himself is in quarantine, said on Tuesday. The health department has got the maximum hit with 40 of the 83 positive cases. None of those tested positive are from among the front line warriors dealing directly with Covid-19 positive patients. Among those who have tested positive include Principal Secretary (Health) Palvi Jain Govil, Additional Director Veena Sinha, Madhya Pradesh Public Health Corporation Managing Director J Vijay Kumar and several others. Most of the top officials of the department who held meetings with those who…

Gujarat: Woman gives birth to baby in ambulance

A woman in Surat city of Gujarat gave birth to a baby in a 108 Ambulance on Tuesday. It happened when the EMT-Paramedics staff, who picked the woman from her house, was going towards the hospital. The staff member safely delivered the baby inside the vehicle. Coronavirus lockdown downs asthma but not necessarily heart attacks

When a country of 1.3 billion came to a standstill late last March, it reported visible improvements in its notoriously polluted air and river waters. Concurrently, top medical experts found a cleaner environment contributing to an improvement in the health of asthma and allergy patients. But they agree there’s no firm benchmark, as of now, to link lower hospital visits by heart patients during the lockdown to a decline in heart disease. According to a Lancet study in 2018, cardiovascular diseases contributed to around 28 per cent of the total deaths in India in 2016, compared with around 15 per cent in 1990. The lockdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t seem to have reduced the incidence. According to the…

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.  Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).

At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments. What is COVID-19
